Originally home to the Caddo, Comanche, and a number of other indigenous peoples, the city of Allen, Texas was founded in 1874 by the Houston and Central Texas Railroad. It was named for railroad promoter and politician, Ebenezer Allen, and for nearly a century the town was occupied by only a few hundred residents as a stop along the Texas Traction Company's line from Denison to Dallas.
When Allen was incorporated in 1953, the city grew dramatically through the construction of U.S. Route 75 and the growth of Dallas and Plano nearby. Today, there are nearly 100,000 residents in Allen covering 27.1 square miles just north of Dallas.
